Life's Top Three Reasons to Ask for Help

January 08, 2019 by Heidi Goehmann in mental health

Asking for help sounds like a good idea…for everybody else.

We like our lives tidy and neat, but we all know our lives are overflowing out the car doors as we travel down the road at 90 miles-per-hour, trying to keep it all contained. There isn’t really an exception to this, I have found. I don’t have my life more together than you and you do not have your life more together than me. We all just have pieces of life we each struggle with, and pieces we each feel some mastery over for the moment, and they differ from day-to-day, month-to-month, and year-to-year.

One primary concept you’ll read in my writing over and over is this:

Mental Health…we all have it.

Just like we all have physical bodies that need tending, we all have brains and hormones and emotions and relationships which need tending as well. We can ignore these things, and we might even get by with it, but usually our mental health needs pop up somewhere in our lives. They often manifest themselves in those relationships we hold closest to us, even if they never make it to some kind of diagnosable issue.

So, this year we’re going to work on asking for help a little bit more. It’s a group effort to alleviate the stigma, judgement, and vulnerability we feel when the need for help rises up, when any need comes up really. I can identify three primary reasons to ask for help. I’m sure there are more, but these are a good place to start -

desperation, growth, and connection.

Find each of these three reasons in our first Mental Health Mondays video below. It’s ten minutes. In the video you’ll hear about each reason and you’ll hear more about moving from those moments of desperation to something more by seeking help. You’ll hear about the possibility of something bigger, something better, and the opportunity to mature in our understanding of our own bodies’ needs, as well as the needs of those we love.
