Emotions & the Gospel

May 16, 2022 by Heidi Goehmann in mental health

Sorrow, joy, distress, contentment, compassion, anxiety, loneliness, pride, longing, delight…

Do you have some favorite emotions from this list? Are there some you’d rather throw out, or maybe even trample on a bit, say goodbye and good riddance, let them eat cake and all of that?

Emotions are nothing if not complex:

They vex us and rev us up.

They can distort our perceptions to see what we want to see, closing us off to reality or to the openness that brings growth alongside of grace.

They can also fuel our understanding of ourselves and others. They can inform us and challenge us to awareness of our capacity and our need for help and for God.

Emotions have their place, but what exactly is that place?

Where do we start in interacting and understanding our emotions and the emotions of others?

How does the redemption and restoration of a God who loves us enough to be with us on this earth, to spend time with us, to sacrifice for us, apply to our emotions and the emotional parts of ourselves?

Along with all these questions, I’d like to introduce you to my forthcoming book:

Emotions & the Gospel: Created for Connection

Preorder

Emotions & the Gospel is designed to bring some spiritual foundations to the topic of emotions. It includes ideas and recommendations for healthy processing of our emotions, wrestles with cultural misconceptions around emotions, and includes a look at the emotions of Scripture and emotions that connect us to God in often surprising ways.

Emotions & the Gospel is due out September 2022! Look for links to put it in the cart and pre-order in August.

Beginning in September, we’ll release articles and resources all year around the topic of emotions, looking at specific ones and building community toward emotional health.
