Have you ever made a bad decision?
Give yourself a pinch to remind yourself you are human, flesh and blood. Not a single person escapes this planet without making some poor choices, or plunging ahead without thinking through the consequences at one time or another and we tend to do it more often than not. As humans we all make bad decisions. It’s a good reminder that we are not God. Only God is perfect and that’s one reason we need Him in our lives so… badly!
God isn’t as complicated as we might think though. At the end of the day, fancy words like justification and sanctification mean this:
God gives us the 10 Commandments and God gives us Jesus to forgive us when we don’t follow them.
Unfortunately, while God is not really complicated, life and sin inside of us are complicated. We want to follow God and do what He says, but at the same time we want to do what we want to do. Sometimes it’s like God just slips out of our head when we want what we want.
The Bible can help us with this problem.
According to God’s Word, there is really only one bad decision - forgetting God.
The Book of Judges makes this very clear for us over and over again.
Long ago God raised up leaders for His people. These leaders were called judges. The title Judges is really a job description, like teacher, mayor, or pastor. Each leader God raised up did one of two things:
They forgot God.
They remembered God.
When we forget God, all kinds of bad things happen. Sometimes when we remember God bad things happen too, because life isn’t very easy, but when we remember God, we don’t have to go through anything bad alone and we don’t end up with the guilt and regret that hurts so badly inside of us. Because remembering God is remembering forgiveness and hope and mercy and all the good stuff God brings to us in Jesus.
God calls the leaders in Judges who remembered Him, Mighty Men.
It is a mighty thing to remember God.
It is a mighty thing when we pray or read the Bible.
It is a mighty thing to confess our sins when we have messed up.
It is a mighty thing Jesus does to forgive us.
It is a mighty thing when we forgive someone else.
It is a mighty thing to share Jesus with someone.
In remembering God, you are God’s mighty warrior.
Right here, right now, we are remembering God together when we talk about His mighty love and forgiveness.
Be a mighty warrior with us over 8 weeks, March 5-April 23, remembering God every week with a special devotion about God’s warriors in the Old Testament. Print the warrior cards and keep track of which Mighty Men are your favorite and help you remember God and which ones made all kinds of bad decisions, but God brought forgiveness to His people through anyway, when they remembered Him again.
Write the word Mighty somewhere you can see it, on a piece of paper, on your hand, or somewhere your family can see it. This is what God calls you, as His very loved child - strong and full of His Spirit - Mighty!
